It’s 5 PM Friday evening. The sun is setting, traffic is barely moving, and the hum of car engines vibrates through the ground. You glance at your phone–another email, another meeting reminder and another reason to feel disconnected. You look out the window: gray buildings, crowded streets, and the endless rush of people and noise.
At that moment, you have a bright idea: a cabin getaway. You look through your phone searching up properties on Airbnb. They’re so many options all spread across the region. Some an hour away but the best ones are 3 or more hours away. That’s just too much, you think. Now you’re overwhelmed and begin to scrap that idea all together.
You just want a simple solution. A quiet and peaceful escape where the only sounds are birds chirping and the wind rustling through the trees. A place where the hustle of everyday life disappears and replaced with the stillness of time in a cozy warm cabin. You don’t want to think too much about it. Just book, pack a few items and go…
I was you. I needed an escape. I needed inspiration. Quietness. Peace and calm. But I never did a cabin getaway from my city and the options on Airbnb were sometimes confusing and down right expensive.
That’s when I discovered Postcard Cabins (formerly Getaway House). Postcard Cabins offers the perfect solution for that easy weekend retreat! Their tiny cabins come fully stocked with everything you need and nothing you don’t. Seriously! There’s no TV but all your basic necessities are included plus a few amenities to help you totally unwind from the grind.
Take your book outside and enjoy nature.
When you first walk in, its small. The kitchen is literally 5 steps in front of the door. But then you turn your head to the left and you’re immediately taken aback by how huge it is with the large window facing the queen bed. The window is floor to ceiling and it makes you feel like you are sleeping outside!
Although the kitchen is small (I believe its actually a kitchenette), there’s two burners, a mini fridge, dishware and cookware to cook your meals. Postcard Cabins also offers coffee and tea (for a fee) so you can sleep in your mornings with a hot cup.
This book, which is available at the cabin, was written by the founder & CEO.
There are a few drawbacks that I want to let you know. After all, it would be a disservice if I didn’t. There is no Wi-Fi and the service is spotty. I didn’t come there to get work done but I do enjoy browsing on my phone so if that is you then come prepared with some books and games to keep you occupied. I also noticed that most of the food options were 20-30 minutes away. This was at the Shenandoah location and I found myself driving to Charlottesville Virginia for more options.
The main difference between Postcard Cabins and an Airbnb cabin is that they aren’t as secluded as you might expect. Yes, you are in the woods, but you do have neighbors. Now I only saw other guests when I was driving to my cabin but if you want to be completely secluded, then you’re better off booking an Airbnb.
Despite this, Postcard Cabins has a really cute set up making great use of the space within nature. The front yard has a picnic table, chairs and a fire pit. You can purchase a firestarter and s’mores for those cozy nights under the stars. I went solo so I didn’t want to bother setting up the fire pit alone. However, Postcard Cabins has a few books next to the kitchenette so I spent some time reading outside instead.
Now you’re probably thinking, “Chyrisse, I still don’t see how this is any different than booking an Airbnb?!” And you’re kinda right. The concept is about the same in terms of booking a beautiful piece of property like a vacation rental. But I love how convenient and accessible these cabins are. The cabins are two hours away from a major city (I stayed at the Shenandoah location which is outside DC). Booking online was super easy–just choose your location and dates. And best of all I don’t have to communicate with a host who has a long list of rules to follow (ummm excuse me you want me to take the trash out?!).
Waking up to this view never got old.
So if you’ve been wanting to book a quick and easy getaway from the city then I highly recommend checking out Postcard Cabins. They have discounts often so check out their site daily. Oh and you don’t have to worry about those pesky cleaning fees!
